Raja yoga in astrology

Raja Yoga Manifestation – Vedic Astrology
How a raja yoga in a vedic chart is going to manifest itself is always hard for anastrologer to predict especially if he is not acquainted with the owner of the chart whichhas a raja yoga in it. While it is very easy to predict the time when such a raja yoga willshow its effects, especially by using the Vimshottari Dasha, it requires more than just acasual glance at the chart to explain the nature of the raja yoga.Raja yoga means a conjunction of at least two plants that produce success, wealth andgood fortune. When a lord of a Kendra and a Trikona combine in a house or aspect eachother, a raja yoga is formed. Such combinations however are very common and foundvery often in the charts of famous as well as ordinary people. While a raja yoga combination is always favorable when it appears in a chart one should be cautious while interpreting it. Astrologers should verify whether planets that form araja yoga are strong or not. This is usually done by studying the position of the concerned planets in the Navamsa chart first or by calculating their Shadbala. If the planets involved are strong enough one can expect good results during the periodsof the planets. But this is only half work done. While a raja yoga promises good fortuneand success during its period, how and from where success is going to come is thehardest to predict. The houses in which raja yoga is formed give us some idea about the area of success butthen again the planets themselves are indicators of houses they own and have to give their effects. In such a scenario it becomes extremely difficult to predict the exact nature of effects. Some astrologers see a raja yoga conjunction in the 9thhouse and then and there predict success, fame and fortune in foreign lands which the 9thhouse rules, when in fact the 9th house also rules spirituality and religion. Hence one may become just a verydevout monk! That does not mean we just consider a house in interpreting a raja yoga combination. Alot also depends on the houses owned by the planets forming the raja yoga. In the chart below, the 5th lord is conjunct 7th lord in the 9th house. During the major period of the 7th lord and the sub period of the 5th lord the person fell in love with a highly educated woman and soon thereafter married her. The 9th house rules higher education also. The fifth house rules love affairs and the 7th house rules marriage. The planets thus during their time produced the results of all threehouses at the same time. This peculiar combination of three factors or what is commonwith these three houses is how the manifestation of a raja yoga took place in this case.Although it is easier to understand this, it is always difficult for an astrologer to find thesemanifestations. For example the 5th house also represents fame, while the 7th house represents fame and honor in foreign countries while the 9th house also represents fameand foreign countries. But the owner of the chart below has never been abroad. As can be seen, it is always difficult for the astrologer to find exactly how the raja yoga isgoing to manifest itself and familiarity with the owner of chart is very often helpful in giving accurate predictions not just about raja yoga combinations but any other auspicious or auspicious combinations.

3rd house in astrology

Third House and Career – Vedic Astrology
The third house in Vedic Astrology deals with all art related matters. Painting, singing, writing, films, dance, drama are matters which are governed by the third house. In the charts of famous actors and singers we very often see a strong third house or many planets placed in the third house. We even see a strong third house in the charts of archeologists, journalists, and people associated with the media industry.
Venus is not the karaka of the third house but Venus represents art and all the third house matters indicated above. When Venus gets connected with the third house either by ownership, occupation or aspect, it gives a boost to the third house matters.
Those who are looking for a career where glamour and public attention are involved need to have a strong Venus and a strong third house.
Together with Venus other planets will produce different artists when placed in the third house.
Mercury indicates writing and when a strong Mercury gets associated with the third house a career in writing is indicated. If not a career in writing, then a person may have good writing skills. This is seen in the charts of journalists and writers.
Professors and teachers are seen from Jupiter’s occupation, aspect or ownership of the third house, as Jupiter being Guru governs teaching.
Saturn in third house, career-wise, gives an interest in philosophy. If a person is a writer, his writings will be philosophical with Saturn in the third house; if a movie director, then he will make movies that have a philosophical outlook.
Ketu and Rahu if aspected by a benefic will give glamour and the struggle for it.
Mars indicates courage, as does the third house and its relationship with the third house can give a career in fields like police and defense.
Sun placed in third house is the same as Mars in the third house and will give courage.
Moon in the third house career-wise indicates an interest in psychology.
The third house governs will power and concentration powers as well. With strong willpower a person can achieve many things easily in life. Afflictions to the rest of the birth chart but a strong third house at the same time can give a person what he wants through willpower. Also, with strong concentration powers a person can focus all his energies on the desired objects and achieve them easily.

Aspects in astrology

Natal Chart Aspects
A natal chart or birth chart is a view of the sky from the exact place and the exact time of a person’s birth. Personality, emotions, and priorities can be observed through astrological aspects between the placement of planets in the natal chart. The Sun sign is the constellation the Sun is in at the exact time of birth. The Moon sign is the Zodiac sign the Moon is in at the exact time of birth. The Rising sign or Ascendant is the Zodiac sign on the eastern horizon at the exact time of birth. Add 12 houses and 10-11astrological planets to the mix, all representing different areas of life, and the beginning of an individual personality can be seen. The Aspects are how all of the above relate to each other. Positive and negative, weak and dominant, aspects can skew the original belief of astrological representation. For example, if there is a conjunction including Venus and the Moon in Aries, it will strengthen the need for love and beauty, feeding on the energy of Mars, Aries’ natural ruler.

Conjunction
A Conjunction is the most powerful aspect. When a natal chart shows two or more astrological planets within 10 degrees of each other, the significance of the planets is combined. When a Conjunction appears, you can expect a double amount of energy from both astrological planets’ influences. Such as, the previous example with Venus and the Moon; love (Venus) and emotions (Moon) are doubly displayed.
Sextile
A Sextile is the opportunity aspect. When a natal chart shows two or more astrological planets near 60 degrees of each other, there is a small possibility for opportunity in theareas the planets represent. This aspect is positive in nature, however, not very dominant. In fact, many other influences in the chart may over ride any of its contributions.
Square
The Square is a negative aspect causing one to learn a lesson by challenge and difficulty. Once again, if two or more astrological planets are near 90 degrees of each other, it mayprove a bit of difficulty in the areas the planets represent. It could possibly cause a much needed change, and if one is aware of this in the birth chart, it can be dealt with. A square often indicates internal conflict.
Trine
If two or more astrological planets are near 120 degrees apart, they create a Trine. This could be a major influence on harmony and communication concerning the areas the planets represent. The Trine is a great aspect to have. It helps to ease any differences between the two planets. This aspect is a peaceful aspect. Too many Trines is a person’s natal chart can cause them to be weak in character since they won’t experience the normal amount of hard knocks life dishes out.
Opposition

An Opposition in a natal chart occurs when two or more astrological planets are near 120degrees apart. This aspect is known as the second most influential aspect. When an Opposition appears in a birth chart, you can expect exactly what it’s named for; obstacles, and unresolved issues.

Karakas in vedic astrology

KARAKAS IN VEDIC ASTROLOGY
The student of vedic astrology comes across the word „karaka‟ quite often in various contexts. In fact most standard texts devote an entire chapter for the „karaka‟ . For instance Parasara‟s magnum opus the „Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra‟ has an entire chapter titled „kaarakaadhyaaya‟ . Even the dasa delineation depends on how accurately one identifies all the karakas involved. Every prediction is based on these karakatwas. In fact any successful astrologer will tell you that your understanding of the chart is directly proportional to how thorough your knowledge of the karakas and their appropriate use is.
The word Karaka means a „significator‟ or “one who causes”. Karaka of a matter is the significator of that particular matter and signifies / causes events related to that matter. Significators can be classified according to various criteria.
Significations may be Natural or Acquired
Natural significations of planets are permanent or fixed in a way and are based on their innate nature. For instance Sun is the karaka for the soul, Moon for the mind, Mercury for the intellect, Mars for courage and Jupiter for children. The detailed natural significations for various planets are given elsewhere.
Planets acquire the power to signify a matter by virtue of their lordships and positions too. These significations are Acquired and change in each chart. For instance the lord of the first house (who ever the planet maybe) acquires signification over all the matters governed by that house. Likewise the second lord acquires signification over matters governed by the second house such as speech, possessions, food/diet etc. The detailed l significations for various houses are given elsewhere.
Acquired or Temporary or Variable karakatwas of planets are defined in another way too in Jaimini system. The Charakarakas of Jaimini are discussed elsewhere in this article.
The above is the simplest and most basic approach to a karaka. As the student progresses, he/she will come across a more in-depth approach to the concept of karakas.
In accordance with tradition, Somanatha Misra writes in Kalpalata (his vrtti on the Jaimini Sutras ) that Karakas are of many kinds ( Kaarakaa bahu vidhaah ) and then deals with the following
Five kinds of karakas
• Karaka
• Atmakaraka
• Swakaraka
• Dasakaraka and
• Bhavakaraka.
Among these five, Jain astrologers are said to favour Atmakaraka and Swakaraka . Atmakaraka is the most favoured planet in Jaimini system and its extensive use is a unique feature of Jaimini astrology.
Swakaraka is the most dependable of all in determining the results of a chart though one should study the chart with reference to other kinds of karakas too. I will deal with the „swakaraka‟ later. First let me define each of these karakas.
ATMAKARAKA
Atmakaraka is the planet that has advanced to the highest degree in any sign. I have written more on the charakarakas and atmakaraka elsewhere in this article.
DASAKARAKA
Dasakaraka is the planet whose influence is prominent during a particular dasa. The lord of the dasa (in a planetary dasa) is the single most influential planet for that particular dasa. But planets conjunct or aspecting or aspected by the dasa lord too influence the dasa. In a rasi dasa, planets in that rasi as well planets involved in aspects with the rasi also determine the results. All such planets become the Dasa karakas in some manner though the Dasa lord is the single most influential planet as the Dasakaraka. Simply put for most practical purposes Dasakaraka is the planet whose dasa is operating.
BHAVAKARAKA
Bhavakaraka is the significator of a house. Bhavakarakas are of two kinds:
Permanent ( Nitya ) and Temporary ( Anitya )
Nitya (Permanent) bhavakarakas :
The permanent significators for the twelve houses are fixed for all charts. Hence the name Nitya indicating „permanent‟. These are:
1 st house: Sun
2 nd : Jupiter
3 rd : Mars
4 th : Moon, Mercury
5 th : Jupiter
6 th : Mars, Saturn
7 th : Venus
8 th : Saturn
9 th : Sun, Jupiter
10 th : Sun, Saturn, Mercury, Jupiter
11 th : Jupiter
12 th : Saturn
Though the above list is supported by standard works such as Phala Deepika, Sarvartha Chintamani, Jataka Parijata etc, Parasara mentions only one planet as the significator for a house. According to the BPHS only Moon is considered for the 4th house, Mars for the 6 th , Jupiter for the ninth and Mercury for the tenth. Who is correct? Depending on the context both versions are correct. For instance Mars is the significator for the sixth if one is referring to enemies. But for other general indications Saturn is also appropriate.
Anitya (Temporary) bhavakarakas:
As already stated a temporary significator of a bhava (house) is a planet that acquires the power to signify matters governed by that house by virtue of its lordship, position, aspects etc in the chart under question. So the lord of the second house, planets in the second house and planets aspecting, all these become the bhavakarakas for the second house in a particular chart.
STHIRA & CHARA KARAKAS
Jaimini makes a distinction between Sthira (Fixed) and Chara (Variable) karakas.
STHIRA KARAKAS
As indicated by the name, these significations of a planet are fixed or permanent in nature. For instance Sun is the karaka for the soul, Moon for the mind, Mercury for the intellect, Mars for courage and Jupiter for children. These are to be learnt from other standard texts. Most texts agree on a majority of the common significations in a general way. The detailed natural significations for various planets, based on standard texts, are given in another article. Here I will confine myself to a few important differences.
Generally it is acceptable to take the Sun as the karaka for father and Moon for the mother. But certain authorities make a distinction between night and day births.
In Brihat Jataka, Varahamihira suggests that Sun is the significator for father and Venus for mother in case of day birth. Likewise Saturn is the significator for father and Moon for mother for night births. Parasara has something else to suggest though it has no distinction between day and night births. The stronger one between Sun and Venus is the significator for father, while the stronger one between Moon and Mars is the significator for mother.
One thing should be kept in mind though. In spite of considering Venus and Saturn too for the mother and father according to day or night birth the general signification of Sun for father and Moon for mother should not be ignored. It works well in practice.
Venus is the significator for „shukla‟ or „semen‟ and in that sense indicates the male fecundity factor. Likewise Mars is the significator for „sonita‟ and in that sense indicates the female fecundity factor at least. Perhaps this may have a bearing on the conception chart.
It is accepted by all that that Venus is the karaka for „beeja‟ (seed) and Mars for the „kshetra‟ (field), a concept that has been used by Mantreswara in calculating the „beeja sphuta‟ and „kshetra sphuta‟ in assessing the fecundity/fertility factor. The sphuta is calculated in a male chart by adding the longitudes of Sun, Venus and Jupiter. In a female chart it is done by adding the longitudes of Moon, Mars and Jupiter. Jupiter is the fixed karaka for children for all charts. Additionally Sun, Venus for males and Moon, Mars for females are taken by Mantreswara in accordance with the above mentioned logic. Parasara‟s suggestion too could be founded on a similar principle and could be useful in a different context. But for all general purposes SOME believe Varahamihira is more acceptable while the standard significations of Sun for father and Moon for mother should be kept in mind at all times.

Vedic astrology vs western astrology

Revelation on the Dilemma of Different Systems of Astrology

There are two different Zodiacal systems which are used in Astrology. Western Astrology uses Sayana type Zodiac (Tropical Zodiac) and the Vedic Astrology uses Nirayana type Zodiac (Sidereal Zodiac). Since there are two different systems being used confusion naturally arises as to which is to be used.
Some astrologers may consider one to be the true zodiac, the other to be in error. Some may consider both to be valid but to different degrees. Some may try to use both together. If we are unbiased, I believe that we can find examples of accurate astrological readings using either of these systems. This may depend more upon the practitioner than the system. Some say that the Tropical system is for westerners, as it was developed there, and that the Sidereal system is for Indians, as it originated from here. The method to predict is different in both the systems and Vedic astrology can give good and accurate readings even for westerners who believe in the Tropical system. Western astrologers can make sense of the Vedic Charts.

Meaning of Ayanamsa

When a Western astrologer says that the Sun is in Aries, he does not mean that the Sun is in the fixed stars of the constellation Aries. He means that it is in the First of a twelvefold division of the zodiac based upon the position of the Sun at the vernal equinox which is usually around March 21st. Similarly, when a Vedic astrologer says that the Sun is in Aries, he means the fixed stars, not the tropical division. The Sun usually enters the fixed star Ashwini around April 14th.Though both astrologers use the same terms, they refer them to different portions of the sky based upon two different ways of dividing the sky. The difference of approximately 23-24 days / degrees between the two systems is termed as Ayanamsa.

Importance of understanding the two Zodiacs

As Vedic astrology is sidereal and based on fixed stars, this means that the signs will change in the Vedic chart from what we find in the Western chart. A person with Taurus Sun sign in Western chart may find their Sun in Aries in the Vedic system. This shift of positions naturally causes some confusion, particularly for those who are not so familiar with Astrology. Hence it is crucial that we understand the two zodiacs and their differences so that we don't confuse one system with the other or try to judge one according to the standards of the other.
To understand this concept we have to visualize the motion of Earths path around the sun. There are a number of fixed stars which the sages have named (Ashwini, Bharani Revati). These constellations are called the Nakshatras and for all practical purposes it may be said that they occupy permanent or fixed positions in the sky. This circle is divided into twelve sections and starts with the first degree of Aries when the Sun crosses the vernal equinox (at equator). Due to the wobbling motion of the earth at the poles the sun does not cross the equator at the same time every year, but it shifts backwards at the rate of about 50.1 seconds per annum, 1 degree in 72 years, 1 sign in 2156 years, completing the circle of 12 signs in about 25,868 years. This backward movement is called "precession of the equinox."
The Sidereal zodiac (Vedic System) is probably the original zodiac historically. The zodiac was invented long before the time when the vernal equinox was in Aries (i.e about 2000 years ago when the sun entered Ashwini Nakshatra). It must have originally been based upon direct observation of the stars. When the sages spoke of the sign Aries, it must have been the fixed star (Nakshatra).

Origin of Astrology

Astrology came originally from India and its astrology has remained fixed throughout its long history. Ancient cultures within us, which maintained the continuity of their civilizations over thousands of years, would quite naturally have to reckon with the precession of the zodiac. This is why the ayanamsa is deducted from the Western chart to determine the positions in the Vedic chart.

Wonders and accuracy of the Systems of Astrology

Western astrology can be accurate. To analyze a Western chart the principles mentioned in Western Astrology needs to be applied. The degrees of a planet in a sign have a special meaning to read the charts. Vedic astrology considers the Sidereal zodiac to be more important as it has existed for over many thousands of years and also predictions using dasa system are based on the constellations. From my personal experience both the systems are correct and can give amazingly accurate results. I usually try to confirm the results from both the methods before deciding the outcome of the prediction.
